Apocalyptic Dreams of 2020 and Beyond

In early April 2020, I dreamed that I am driving through a blacked out city feeling panicky because the headlights on the car won’t work. I go into an abandoned warehouse and fight hand to hand combat with two zombie women. They are being controlled by a 5G transmitter up in the rafters, and I have to climb up there to deactivate the signal and defeat them. I don’t ever recall having a zombie dream previously despite having grown up in Pittsburgh where they filmed the Night of the Living Dead in a mall.

A few days later I discovered that the pandemic is giving people vivid, unusual dreams as detailed in research by my colleague from the International Society for the Study of Dreams, Harvard professor Deidre Barrett. The two main patterns of dreams she described were about getting sick and dying from the virus or about metaphorical apocalyptic fears of bugs, zombies, natural disasters, shadowy figures, monsters, or mass shooters. In September, the journal she edits, Dreaming, published more pandemic dream studies.

For me, the dream represented the intersection of my two main concerns at the time about the pandemic fear propaganda that was being hyped hypnotically in the mainstream media and about my own personal fears of the health hazards related to the rollout of 5G. It seemed that the telecom companies had successfully brainwashed everyone including the government into believing that 5G was going to be essential for us to be able to compete in the global economy and create smart cities like Wuhan.

In October, I dreamed about total confusion and panic over the PCR pandemic. There are ants on my basement floor and in a large jar covered only by a porous lid. A slimy slug pokes its way out, and I yell that it has messed with the wrong guy! I start thinking of ways to kill all the bugs, and the slug suddenly grows huge and looms over me. It starts to attack, and I grab it by the neck to throttle it. I have had ants in my basement once, but all the slugs I’ve ever seen have been outside on the sidewalks around the house.

The ants fit into the pandemic dreams metaphorical pattern, but the slug seemed to be of special significance beyond the obvious phallic symbol imagery. For me, it represented the slimy patriarchal spokespersons of the national and global health agencies who were gaslighting the entire world to promote the vaccine agenda and suppress discussion of any other possible therapies. Even the Lancet and NEJM being forced to retract two fraudulent papers in May was not enough to choke off the onslaught of fear porn.

In December, my dreams shifted from the pandemic to a post-election theme. I am digging a hole in my backyard to place a metal cross into the ground when I hear the voice of JFK, Jr. saying November 3rd was Trump’s crucifixion. I am surprised when the cross suddenly disappears into the hole, but I reach down to grab the end of it just in time. I pull the cross back up, and it floats out of the ground into the air suggesting resurrection. As I wrote 2 years ago, perhaps Donald Trump is the First President of the Apocalypse.

The final dream in this series occurred in early March after an intense Zoom discussion with some of my closest friends about the far extremes of the political left and right. I am driving down a 4-lane highway following friends in a car ahead of me who suddenly veer off onto a left exit. I go zooming past the exit and make a U-turn coming back on the right side of the highway. I somehow get to our destination ahead of them and am waiting there with a big umbrella for them as it starts to rain when they arrive.

I’ll leave the interpretation of this dream up to the readers, so please post your analyses in the comments. Here are insights into interpreting dreams in multiple dimensions. I anticipate we will have more revealing dreams before Easter. In May, please join me in discussing them at a 5/6/21 lecture on Apocalyptic Dreams, Marian Apparitions and Praying the Rosary, a 5/22/21 workshop on Transforming Symptoms of the Lower 4 Chakras, and two related workshops at the Haden Institute Dream & Spirituality Conference.
